Stained Glass
I took my first Stained Glass class in 1998 through Oakland Community College. I knew after taking that class that I was going to continue to explore glass and set up a studio in my home. I originally did pieces as gifts for family and friends and then an occasional request would come in to make a custom piece. As time went on I started to get a few referrals to do repairs - which proved to be challenging and quite fun.
I put a simple ad on Craig's List for stained glass repair and within a month I picked up my biggest job to date. The job involved repairing windows in a 150 year old church that was moved from Whittaker MI to Milan MI. The church was purchased and moved to make room for a housing development. It now stands on 10 beautiful acres of land in Milan and has been restored to be a non denominational wedding chapel - The Field Of Dreams Wedding Chapel. You can see more about this church and pictures of it on the Church Repair drop down under Stained Glass.
Shortly after starting work on the church I began to volunteer at the Huron Valley Council for the Arts. That association gave me the opportunity to start teaching classes. I teach beginning foil and beginning lead classes most often but will also do advanced classes for those who are looking for an extra challenge. I also teach a 'repair' class which shows the process of repairing broken stained glass. This class gives the student two outcomes - first, they learn how to do stained glass and second, they get their broken stained glass item repaired. Now that's a win - win opportunity!
